Having been always fascinated by the the well known rhyme “One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told.”
This is the first of a series of paintings inspired by magpies and the superstitions regarding this bird. In this painting, the magpie steals the heart shaped pendant, that represents “the sorrow”, the permanent damage that can be brought on by a traumatic experience in ones life, not only the end of a relationship, but also the loss of a loved one or a difficult childhood.
